1. Herpes simplex
Two types of herpes simplex exist: herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2).
Both can cause cold sores and genital herpes. The herpes virus is comunicable by close personal contact, such as kissing and sexual intercourse.
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
There is no cure for herpes. Once a person has the virus, it remains in the body.
The virus lies latent in the nerve cells until something triggers it to become active again.
Herpes outbreaks, can include the painful herpes sores. Antiviral medication such as aciclovir can control it.
